New research shows pterygoid bone medialisation linked to poor BOAS surgical outcomes in French Bulldogs

A study, funded by BSAVA PetSavers and published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice, is the first to investigate the effect of pterygoid bone medialisation and nasopharyngeal narrowing on BOAS surgical outcomes in brachycephalic and non-brachycephalic dogs.

Laparoscopic ovariectomy vs open ovariohysterectomy study

Female dogs neutered by laparoscopic ovariectomy experience fewer postoperative complications and unusual behaviours in the days following surgery compared to those undergoing more traditional open ovariohysterectomy via celiotomy, according to new research partially funded by BSAVA PetSavers through a Student Research Project grant.

BSAVA PetSavers launches joint funding with the Animal Welfare Foundation

1 August 2025

BSAVA PetSavers is partnering with the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) to jointly fund a master’s degree by research in animal welfare. The grant will offer up to £42,000 to cover a postgraduate student stipend at BBSRC standard rates and a veterinary stipend can be requested.
