2025 Winner – Sam Khan BVetMed PhD MRCVS

Sam Khan is the recipient of this year’s award in recognition of his research paper; Recovery of ambulation in small, nonbrachycephalic dogs after conservative management of acute thoracolumbar disk extrusion.  Published in the July 2024 issue of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. This paper was thought to provide highly relevant prognostic information for clinicians, and may result in fewer dogs being euthanised when presenting with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniation where referral and surgical treatment is less of an option, for example in the charity sector

Sam graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2017, and during a rotating small animal internship at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, he developed an interest in neurology and canine spinal cord injury which led to undertaking a PhD focusing on conservative management of canine disc extrusions, which he completed in 2023.
