
The Bourgelat Award is the BSAVA’s primary recognition for really outstanding international contributions to the fields of small animal practice or science in their widest context. Nominations can include science as well as practice, but are limited to vets.

Ian Ramsey BVSc PhD DSAM DipECVIM-CA FHEA FRCVS
This year’s Bourgelat Award goes to Ian Ramsey in recognition as one of the leading veterinary specialists both in the UK and internationally. His outstanding contributions to all areas of internal medicine, particularly in the field of endocrinology have had a significant and lasting impact on the profession. Ian is widely regarded as an exceptional lecturer, whose teaching continues to inspire colleagues and students alike. Currently, he is the Professor of Small Animal Medicine at Glasgow University Veterinary School.
Ian will be giving his Bourgelat lecture, ‘The weird and wonderful world of endocrinology’ on 22nd April at 8pm. The lecture will be freely available online and open to the whole profession – more details to follow on our course page.
Full biography
Ian Ramsey is the Professor of Small Animal Medicine at Glasgow University Veterinary School. He graduated from Liverpool in 1990, completed his PhD at Glasgow in 1993 and his residency at Cambridge in 1997. He is a British (RCVS) and European diplomate in small animal medicine and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2016. He has published widely on various aspects of small animal medicine but now mainly focusses on clinical endocrinology. He helped develop trilostane as an effective treatment for canine Cushing’s disease from the 2000’s, edited the BSAVA Small Animal Formulary and developed the PROTECTME scheme in the 2010s and is currently developing haemoglobin A1c as an effective monitoring tool for canine diabetes. He has previously received the BSAVA Woodrow Award for his work on antibiotic stewardship and the SAMSOC Achievement Award for his work on small animal endocrine disease. He has served on numerous professional bodies and has been a member of BSAVA since 1988 and part of the volunteer community since 1995. He was BSAVA President 2020-21.
