Tail docking (Scotland) consultation

As a membership organisation, the BSAVA is often asked to represent the views of its members to external organisations. In order to do this, the BSAVA undertakes a number of consultations with its members on subjects of importance to small animal practice.

The Scottish Government are currently consulting on a proposal to permit tail docking of working spaniels and hunt point retrievers. This follows new evidence from recent research (Lederer et al., 2014; Cameron et al., 2014) which reported that the number needed to treat to prevent one amputation in working dogs was 232 (Cameron et al., 2014).
