BSAVA pays tribute to former President Des Thompson OBE
19 September 2024
The BSAVA has paid tribute to former President and veterinary surgeon, Des Thompson OBE.
Des Thompson first qualified with honours from Trinity College Dublin in 1961, immediately joining his father’s practice in the centre of Belfast where most of his work was with large animals. He attended his first BSAVA Congress in 1966, and that was where he saw there was a major challenge within the small animal field worth developing.
Des became President of the BSAVA in 1982 and won the BSAVA Melton Award in 1986 for his meritorious contributions to small animal veterinary practice. He then went on to receive his OBE in 1991 for his services to the veterinary profession, as well as awards from WSAVA and the BVBA.
In 2023, the BSAVA held an event in Northern Ireland dedicated to Des, celebrating 40 years since his BSAVA Presidential year. Speaking at the event, BSAVA Past President (2022-2023) Alison Speakman said: “He was an enthusiastic contributor to several BSAVA committees and the board, and in 1982-83 served as President of the association, a role he undertook with his characteristic enthusiasm, hard work, and good humour.
“Since his retirement, he has continued to be actively involved in the work of many associations and has continued to be an active contributor and proud supporter of the BSAVA – attending every past president’s meeting, AGM and until the pandemic, never missed a BSAVA Congress since that first one in 1966. Des holds the record for the most BSAVA Congresses attended by any individual! There is not enough time or words to really explain how much Des has given to vets, nurses, students, owners, and pets throughout his career.”
BSAVA Past President (1999-2000) Harvey Locke said: “The word legend is often overused, but Des was a true legend of our profession. He not only totally devoted his life to animal welfare but also to the welfare of fellow professionals whether it be vets, nurses, or other paraprofessionals. Des was everyone’s friend who has done a massive amount of good for the profession. He will be hugely missed by us all.”
Paying tribute to Des, current BSAVA President Julian Hoad said: “Above all, Des Thompson was a real gentleman. He exuded positivity and love for the profession which was truly infectious. Any time spent with Des made you feel proud to be part of the profession that had him in it. He will leave a real hole in many people’s hearts. On behalf of the BSAVA, I send our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
