Bourgelat winner to discuss new FAST® initiative at BSAVA Congress

Dr Gregory Lisciandro DVM, DABVP, DACVECC, will be delivering his session “Global FAST® is our new core skill: changing the patient care paradigm” at BSAVA Congress on Saturday 25^th March, after winning the Bourgelat Award for 2023.

The acronym FAST stands for an ultrasound examination called Focused Assessment with Sonography and Trauma, which was created as a triage and post-interventional screening test by human trauma surgeons in the 1990’s. Global FAST® is the combined use of AFAST® (Abdominal), TFAST® (Thoracic), and Vet BLUE® (lung) as a single veterinary ultrasound examination.

An initiative that was developed in 2010, the session will look into understanding how Global FAST® avoids imaging interpretation errors, and why it should be used as an extension of the physical exam on veterinary patients.

Dr Lisciandro attended the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and completed an internship at the Animal Medical Centre in New York City. He has practiced veterinary medicine for over 30 years as a general practitioner, emergency room veterinarian, and as a specialist in emergency and critical care. He developed AFAST® and TFAST® in 2005, and Vet BLUE® and Global FAST® in 2010 and has authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed Global FAST®-related clinical studies.

Currently he is co-owner of FASTVet.com, an online point-of-care educational website, and Hill Country Veterinary Specialists. He has lectured to physicians and veterinary professionals and directed Global FAST® ultrasound scanning workshops around the world.
