APHA Avian Expert Group: Member vacancy
25 September 2024
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) Avian Expert Group (AEG) currently has a vacancy for a poultry veterinary practitioner who works with smallholder/pet/backyard poultry.
The APHA AEG is chaired by the APHA’s avian expert group lead and the membership is drawn from across the APHA surveillance network, as well as from poultry vets in private practice.
For the new member currently being recruited, the main criteria are that the person is a veterinary practitioner and has an interest in disease surveillance and investigation. The role isn’t onerous, the Group meets online for an hour every two months and usually have one longer face-to-face meeting each year. There may also be the occasional query or request for comment about the small holder sector.
See further information about the AEG here: APHA Vet Gateway – Avian disease surveillance (defra.gov.uk)
The APHA species groups work with veterinary and relevant sector contacts to:
- Detect new and re-emerging animal related threats
- Provide species-based expertise to others in APHA and Defra
- Develop surveillance and knowledge exchange networks
- Maintain and develop expertise within and outside APHA
If you would be interested in joining the AEG please e-mail the Group Lead Zoe.Treharne@apha.gov.uk with a short paragraph detailing your current work with smallholder, backyard or pet poultry along with your interest in disease surveillance and investigation by the 20th October 2024.
