The BSAVA Formulary has been one of the profession’s most valued and trusted publications for over a quarter of a century. Both parts of the formulary provide a list of drugs available for use in veterinary care alongside additional information.
Part A: Canine and Feline
The BSAVA Small Animal Formulary 12th edition – Part A: Canine and Feline marks the return of Fergus Allerton as Editor‑in‑Chief, with all drug monographs comprehensively reviewed and updated by the Editorial Panel throughout 2025 to ensure they reflect the most current information available for medicines used in dogs and cats. This latest edition introduces several new drug monographs, highlights extemporaneous veterinary specials through VSP labelling, and includes expanded content on treatments for urinary incontinence. The Appendix has been enhanced with the addition of a seizure algorithm, updated guidance on supplements and nutraceuticals, and more extensive details on contrast agents. The resource is further enriched with seven new client information leaflets, featuring medicines such as bezafibrate, chloramphenicol, clomipramine and memantine.

The new edition features additional drug monographs, emergency drug doses for commonly treated exotic species placed inside the front cover for quick reference, and expanded guidance in the Appendix on the use of barium and iodinated contrast agents for diagnostic imaging, including essential safety notes and handling advice. It also introduces a comprehensive suite of client information leaflets explaining different routes of administration, from inhaled and injectable treatments to oral and topical ear and eye medications.
