The VN Futures School Ambassadors Scheme

25 September 2022

What is the VN Futures School Ambassadors Scheme?

The VN Futures School Ambassadors Scheme launched on 5th May 2022, and is open to RVN registrants, and SVNs who are in, or beyond, their second year of training.

The aim of the scheme is to create a network of veterinary nurses to increase awareness of a career in veterinary nursing through delivery of school talks and other activities.

How does the scheme work?

The scheme runs in conjunction with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Learning, and all VN School Ambassadors are requested to register with STEM, complete STEM induction training, and gain a DBS certificate (PVG in Scotland).

Resources available to registered ambassadors on the VN Futures site include planning guidance, approaches and ideas for delivering talks or activities, practical tasks that can be completed in the classroom, careers information leaflets and vet nursing posters.

One of the key resources developed as part of the scheme is an animated careers video, which offers a punchy and informative outline of the key responsibilities of veterinary nurses, how to gain a VN qualification, and the many career options available once registered as a veterinary nurse.

VN Futures Lead, RVN Jill Macdonald said:” We were so excited to launch the scheme and make all the amazing resources we have developed available to those wishing to take on a rewarding ambassadorial role. Uptake to the scheme has been incredible and we have, to date, over 200 registrants on the scheme. It’s wonderful to see how willing VNs are to put themselves forward to help the future of their profession. I also know from my own experience, that is incredibly fulfilling to talk about veterinary nursing and the opportunities that the career brings, and I’m sure RVNs who participate in the scheme will agree with me’.
