25 April 2020

At the start of 2020, the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) investigated reports of acute onset prolific vomiting (five or more episodes in a 12-hour period where a foreign body or pancreatitis were considered unlikely) in dogs across the UK.

Based on statistical analysis conducted at the University of Lancaster, it was clear that the pattern of gastroenteritic disease in dogs with outwith normal, therefore constituting an outbreak. Analysis of data suggests that this outbreak is now over. You can read their latest report on the outbreak here.

During the outbreak, practitioners were encouraged to send clinical samples from affected animals for microbiological testing to aid with investigation of the outbreak.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who reported affected cases and submitted samples.
