Anti-microbial resistance central to BSAVA’s new Welsh seaside CPD event

12 June 2019

Discussion sessions on large and small animal anti-microbial resistance will be central to BSAVA’s Vets Cymru, a new mixed practice CPD event to be held in Aberystwyth on 28 – 29 June 2019. The ‘think tank’ discussion sessions will be held twice daily on both days of the event to address the overriding concerns presented by this persistent veterinary conundrum.

Vets Cymru is the first event of its kind to be held in Wales and has been designed by BSAVA’s Cymru committee to meet the needs of veterinary practitioners and nurses in mixed practice, who often work in relative isolation and have to travel long distances for training. The programme features four streams of clinically-led CPD, run over two days and will be rounded off with a traditional social occasion on the sea front.

Anti-microbial resistance will be a recurring theme throughout the event. RVC senior lecturer in dairy herd medicine and BVA Senior Vice President John Fishwick will lead twice daily discussion sessions to address the issue in-depth, considering the common aspects for both large animal and small animal sectors.

“Anti-microbial resistance remains an over-riding concern to every practitioner,” said Kate O’Sullivan, Chair of the Cymru/Wales Region. “These discussion-led sessions are aimed at knowledge-sharing and problem solving and will be driven by participation from delegates. We are privileged to have bovine health management Specialist John Fishwick as presenter and facilitator.”

Other highlights include vet David Church lecturing on small animal medicine endocrinology and leading a medical mystery tour, and Sue Paterson speaking on dermatology. Fyrnwy Equine Group will be providing equine lectures in the large animal stream, Burtons Veterinary Equipment will be sponsoring a practical endoscopy event and Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales, Christianne Glossop, will give a welcome address at a drinks reception on the Friday evening.

In addition to providing 12 hours of high quality CPD Vets Cymru will have a lively exhibition hall and social calendar which includes a traditional Welsh Twmpath which involves an unwinding combination of drinks, food and dancing on the seafront.
