BSAVA unveils 12th edition of the Small Animal Formulary

The BSAVA has released the 12th edition of the BSAVA Small Animal Formulary Part A: Canine and Feline, and Part B: Exotic Pets.

The cornerstone of the BSAVA Medicines Suite, the Formulary remains one of the Association’s most trusted and widely used clinical resources for veterinary professionals.

Part A: Canine and Feline Formulary

The latest edition of the BSAVA Small Animal Formulary, 12th edition – Part A: Canine and Feline sees Fergus Allerton return as Editor-in-Chief. The drug monographs were thoroughly revised and updated by the Editorial Panel during 2025 to ensure that they provide the most up-to-date information available on the medicines used to treat dogs and cats.

New to the 12th edition:

  • New drug monographs have been added, including citalopram, enflicoxib, ilunocitinib and verdinexor
  • Drugs that are available as extemporaneous products (also known as ‘veterinary specials’) are denoted as VSP in the formulations section of the monographs
  • Information on drugs used for the management of urinary incontinence
  • A seizure algorithm, guidance on supplements and nutraceuticals, and expanded information on contrast agents have been added to the Appendix
  • There are 7 new client information leaflets that have been added to the existing resource, including bezafibrate, chloramphenicol, clomipramine and memantine

Part B: Exotic Pets Formulary

The BSAVA Small Animal Formulary, 12th edition – Part B: Exotic Pets continues to set the standard for responsible prescribing in the growing and diverse field of exotic animal medicine. The species covered in this edition include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Under the guidance of Editor-in-Chief, Joanna Hedley, the drug monographs were comprehensively reviewed and updated by the Editorial Panel during 2025.

New to the 12th edition:

  • New drug monographs have been added, including afoxolaner, atorvastatin and danofloxacin
  • Emergency drug doses for rabbits, rodents, ferrets, birds and reptiles have been added to the inside front cover as a readily accessible reference guide
  • Information on barium and iodinated contrast agents for diagnostic imaging has been added to the Appendix. Covering the range of agents available, along with notes on safety and handling, contraindications and complications, this will provide a valuable resource for practitioners
  • A suite of routes of administration client information leaflets has been produced covering inhaled medications, injectable medications, oral medications, topical ear medications and topical eye medications
  • Additional information on proprietary fish medicines and drug doses for different species of British wildlife, including badgers, deer, foxes and hedgehogs, is available via the BSAVA library
